ATI graphics driver has stopped responding and has restarted sucessfully

This issue has been stated in other posts with no solution, but i was asked to start a new thread with my specific details so here it goes.
I have a Acer laptop Aspire 8942G with a Intel core i3 CPU and 4 gigs of RAM with a ATI Radeon mobility HD 5650 graphics card.
I am running Windows 7 Premium 64 bit OS.
Randomly especially after initial start up the graphics driver will stop responding with the error message stated in the topic line.
Usually the screen will flash black and come back with that message.
Some times just one time some times several time but
usually will settle down.
Sometime the systemm completely locks down and I have to shut it off and restart the system.
I am currently running the ATI Catalyst software and driver version 10.8 which is the most current version.
I have also downloaded the graphics software that came originally loaded on the system from the Acer wesite.
I have completely uninstalled all the
ATI software and the graphics adapter and done clean installs with both ATI software packages, the original and the new. I am still getting the error message.
The only time I get any relief from the lock ups is when I uninstall the graphics adapter and use
the Windows standard VGA adapter but then I lose all functionality of the high end graphics card.
I would suspect the ATI software but I have seen posts with the same problems from other users with Nvidia cards as well. Please offer some insight this is extrememly frustrating
